This is probably the most radical prototype ever produced by SEAT. Actually, it is a series production Ateca, but fitted with a set of snow tracks replacing the wheels. That makes it a raised and hyper-widened all-terrain vehicle. Its natural habitat is the snow, but it is approved for circulation on the street.
The launch of SEAT’s Ateca in 2016 opened a new chapter in the world of SEAT, as it was the brand's first volume-production SUV. Thus, the project started at the Martorell Technical Centre with the 2011 SEAT IBX concept-car was concluded, and a new family was born that today is completed by the Arona (at the bottom) and the Tarraco (at the top).
The significance of the launch stimulated the imagination of SEAT’s Technical Centre engineers, who decided to adapt an Ateca for extreme use on snowy terrain, with a view to the SEAT Ateca Snow Experience, a media presentation to be held in 2017.
SEAT technicians didn't really beat about the bush. They started from an Ateca 2.0 TDI 190 CV 4Drive, the most powerful model in the Ateca line-up, and replaced all four wheels with a set of snow tracks from the American manufacturer Mattracks, weighing 80 kg each.
Apart from the modifications necessary to fit them, the Ateca Mattracks is a strictly standard unit... but with a striking monstrous look about it, owing to its massive height and width. And it copes like fish in the water on snow ‒ its traction on snowy terrain is unbeatable, but in case of trouble it has a powerful winch in the back.
Between February and March 2017, the prototype was homologated and registered by SEAT. Therefore, it can be driven normally on public roads (always with an authorized person behind the wheel), although on tarmac its handling is quite ungainly... you better wait for snow!
After their cycle at the Technical Centre was completed, the Ateca Mattracks is now part of the SEAT HISTÓRICOS Collection, as a symbol of the crazy things that SEAT’s engineers are able to create when you let their ingenuity run wild.
