The SEAT Ibiza ST was the estate variant of the fourth generation Ibiza, the only one to offer this possibility. It was a vehicle with all the qualities of the Ibiza IV, but also with the large boot of a mid-size compact estate.
The fourth generation Ibiza was born in 2008, first with a 5-door body, launched at the Madrid Motor Show (in May), and then with a 3-door body, unveiled at the London Motor Show (in July). The latter was called SC, which stood for Sport Coupé. A couple of years later, in 2010, SEAT further diversified the range of its best-selling model with a third body variant, the estate or ST.
Just as the Ibiza IV had been previewed in the form of a concept car, the Ibiza SportCoupé Bocanegra, unveiled at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show, the Ibiza ST was also first revealed as a prototype. It was the IBZ, unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
The IBZ combined flexibility and functionality without compromising the Ibiza's exterior and interior design. In this way, it faithfully embodied the brand's values: youthfulness, innovative design and sportiness. The recipe was to be transferred with precision to the Ibiza ST.
The final production version of the Ibiza ST was unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, six months after the IBZ was shown. It went on sale before the summer, after its international commercial launch at the Barcelona Motor Show. Like the Ibiza IV, the Ibiza ST was the work of the SEAT Design department, then headed by Luc Donckerwolke.
The acronym ST (SportsTourer) had been used for the first time on the Exeo ST, launched the previous year. However, the Ibiza ST was not a new concept in the SEAT range. In fact, it was a reinterpretation of the Córdoba Vario variant that the Córdoba I had had, and which was not continued in the Córdoba II. The Ibiza IV did not have a three-volume derivative like the Córdoba, but, in exchange, it once again offered a compact estate car.
The Ibiza ST was 20 centimetres longer than the 5-door version... and 11 cm longer than the old Córdoba Vario. With the same wheelbase as the ‘standard’ Ibiza, the extra size was devoted to the boot, with no less than 430 litres of capacity, 145 litres more than the Ibiza and still 40 litres more than the Córdoba Vario.
With the exception of the rear overhang, the Ibiza ST was identical to its 5-door sibling. However, the most powerful engines were not available in the ST's engine range. That said, the 1.2 TSI 105 HP and 1.2 TDI CR 75 HP engines made their debut in the ST and were soon to be introduced in the rest of the Ibiza range.
Like the Ibiza IV, the ST received a restyling in 2012, with a new front end and sharper headlamps, in the style of the Mii. Then the sporty FR (Formula Racing) trim became available on the ST as well.
The ST also took a big leap in connectivity in mid-2015, as did the rest of the Ibiza range. Finally, in October 2016, the SC and ST variants were discontinued, and the Ibiza IV ended its commercial life with only the 5-door version in 2017. With the arrival of the Ibiza V, the 3-door SC and estate ST bodies would no longer be offered. Instead, an SUV derivative of the Ibiza, the Arona, would be launched.
